The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the oldest and most prominent educational institution in Greece in the area of technology. It has greatly contributed to the scientific, technical and economic development of the country since it was established in 1836, only a few years after the founding of the Hellenic nation. Its name in greek (Metsovio) honors three great national benefactors C. Averoff, N. Stournaris, E. Tositsas, whose birthplace was Metsovo, a small historic town in northwestern Greece, in Epirus.
NTUA as a Higher Educational Institution (HEI) has been structured using the Continental European educational model for engineering schools, which provides fundamental engineering knowledge and develops scientific, communication and problem solving skills through a combination of practical, hands-on courses, industry projects and theoretical foundations. A professionally qualified engineer, needs to complete five years of study. Through study and research, NTUA's mission is to provide premium quality higher education while promoting science and technology.
NTUA's great national contribution and attainment of a distinguished academic rank was due to its high structural requirements, distinguished professors and high quality students. Also suitable infrastructure and the reorganization of the program of studies and research, has resulted in enriching NTUA's mission to be a modern scientific, interdisciplinary institution, that will strengthen and guarantee its wider social role in society, according to the demands and visions of the 21st century.
